Young Justice: The Final 3 Episodes

So for this recap post, I decided to do things differently. I’ve combined “Intervention”, “Summit”, and “Endgame” into this post for two reasons: 1) the heroes are on the offensive… finally, and 2) these are the last episodes of the series. I know. Start crying. Before you shed a tear, how about we break down these episodes into “The Good” and “The Bad” because there’s no crying in recapping… at least not until the recapping is finished.

“Intervention”

Intervention

The Good:

In this episode, the Team freed Blue and Green Beetle from Reach control using some magical Egyptian-esque tomb place that has a how-to guide for freeing Reach scarabs (pretty convenient if you ask me). Oh, and you needed a human to cast the enchantment, and no one is more human and magical than our lovely Zatana. I also loved the way they used Batgirl and Impulse as a diversion while Rocket and Zatana were the real deals in capturing Blue Beetle. Loved the slow-mo of Impulse getting onto Blue Beetle’s back for no other reason than it was in slow-mo and enjoyed getting to hear Jaime’s reaction of being controlled as well. By the way, I LOVED the Reach Scientist’s nagging near the end. No one says I-told-you-so better than her. Ha! Oh, and Green Beetle isn’t a big jerk after all. I mean he was but only because he was controlled.

The Bad:

I really didn’t care about Miss Martian and Lagoon Boy’s relationship problems. I just didn’t.

“Summit”

Summit

The Good:

One of the best episodes of the series. The Reach and the Light meet for a Summit to air out grievances, and the Team uses that setting as a place to strike. At some point, the bad guys find out that Artemis and Aqualad are playing them, and they’re shot dead by Deathstroke. Then Aqualad has a secret hologram recording and outs the bad guys to one another so they can turn against each other. They blab about everything including setting up the Justice League (really guys? Not good with the whole keeping your mouth shut thing, huh?) and that’s when Aqualad and Artemis are all, “We’re not dead!” because Deathstroke was actually Miss Martian the whole time. Then, in comes the Team ready to kick butt—but wait! The Light has reinforcements—But wait! Some of those reinforcements (ninjas) are actually some of the Team members in disguise!

Fighting ensues. Vandal Savage escapes with Klarion and the Warworld. Ra’s Al Ghul gets stabbed, but we don’t care because we know he’ll get revived in the Lazarus Pit. Black Manta gets his butt handed to him by Aqualad. Black Beetle ditches the Ambassador and self-appoints himself the leader before running away. At some point, Kid Flash offers his suit to Impulse since he’s retiring for good. So. Much. Happens. The UN rescinds the Reach’s invitation and, being Black Beetle, that means destroying the earth to get rid of evidence of their tampering… yay?

The Bad:

NOTHING. This was the episode we were building up to!!!

“Endgame”

Endgame

The Good:

We see the Justice League (i.e. the main crew) convicted, but by the end they’re released, so all is good. I love that the Tribunal is blatantly hinting at a bribe as an exchange for freedom. Corruption isn’t a human thing, folks.

Black Beetle gets his scarab destroyed. Liked the appearance of Darkseid at the end and it would’ve been an awesome season 3 if the show were to continue. Despite saying that I didn’t care about Lagoon Boy and Miss Martian’s relationship squabbles, I LOVED Artemis and Kid Flash’s MFD takedown that resulted in a much needed make-out session. There was also the introduction of Black Lighting who volunteered to be Virgil’s mentor since Virgil is a part of the team now as Static. Oh and Lex Luthor might be the next Secretary General of the UN. What. The. Hell. Lastly, I was happy that the end tied back to the fact that Nightwing, Aqualad, and Kid Flash were the ones who started this all and seeing Nightwing step down as leader was sad but it was also nostalgic when Aqualad becomes leader again.

The Bad:

There were many things I didn’t like about this finale and I’m not sure how much of it is due to the unexpected cancellation and trying to tie everything up. Too much happened in this episode, and it felt like chugging down a gallon of water after being thirsty for days (I also call this Smallville Series Finale Syndrome… Yup. I went there).

First, the MFDs (or pod thingies) were super easy to deal with thanks to Lex’s convenient Anti-Reach virus. Second, it was also a “nice” twist (it wasn’t a twist at all) that Blue Beetle was unable to detect one in time to stop it from being too out of control to be affected by Lex’s Anti-Reach virus. Obviously, this meant it was a job for the Speedsters because running really fast always seems to be the thing to do in these situations. Spoiler: Kid Flash dies. Or at least to everyone else because I think he’s gone to the speed force. This was supposed to mean something and I feel bad, kind of, but there was no real build-up so the impact wasn’t felt. Sorry. Artemis’ reaction did get me teary eyed. What’s with the relationships in these last few episodes? I still don’t care about Miss Martian’s love life and when did Wonder Girl and Robin become a thing? Was this thrown in because it worked so well in last season’s finale?

Overall, was the invasion a great storyline or worth the risk? Eh. It would’ve been better if it happened after another season or two of the pre-five years heroes. It had a great and complicated plot which was amazing for a kids’ show but there were a lot of episodes that were just… there. In the end, I love this show and I’m sad to see it go.

What do you guys think? Was it a great season/series?
